Identify and Report Invasive Plants, Animals, Insects, and Plant Pathogens in the Great Lakes region of the U.S.
The Great Lakes Early Detection Network (GLEDN) app extends the capability of EDDMapS to your smartphone, enabling direct submission of invasive species sightings from the field. These observations are then uploaded to EDDMapS for review by local and state verifiers. Developed by the University of Georgia's Center for Invasive Species and Ecosystem Health, the GLEDN app is part of a comprehensive initiative that encompasses invasive species reporting and outreach efforts in the Great Lakes region of the United States, alongside the GLEDN website. The project and app are collectively known as EDDMapS Midwest.
Discovering new invasive plants, animals, insects, and plant pathogens each year within the Great Lakes region poses a significant threat to the local ecosystem. These non-native invasive species not only disrupt environmental balance but also have far-reaching implications such as altering native landscapes, negatively affecting indigenous wildlife, damaging agricultural yields, and jeopardizing public health. The invasion of exotic species results in an annual expenditure exceeding $120 billion in the United States, reflecting economic costs that pale in comparison to their ecological impact. With millions of acres of public lands in the southern United States serving as crucial sources of drinking water, clean air, and recreational activities, these lands remain highly susceptible to invasions by non-native plants and animals.
By promptly reporting sightings of invasive plants and other pests, we can gain a better understanding of infestation levels and endeavor to eliminate emerging issues before they escalate into significant challenges akin to kudzu proliferation. GLEDN aims to streamline identification and reporting processes, simplifying them for greater efficiency.
A mere few minutes of your time can furnish crucial data required to safeguard vital wildlife habitats, agricultural lands, forests, and your preferred recreational spots from harm inflicted by invasive species. Its user-friendly interface allows for effortless data collection while engaging in activities such as fishing, hiking, kayaking, or strolling around your neighborhood.
Features:
- GPS automatically records your current location
- Attach an image of your sighting to enhance report validation
- Online reporting capability
- Offline reporting functionality: save reports on your device for later upload when network connectivity is available
- Comprehensive Species ID Guides offering images and information on prominent non-native invasive plants, animals, insects, and plant pathogens
- Displays real-time distribution maps focused on your current location
- Access to invasive species resources
Powered by EDDMapS - The University of Georgia Center for Invasive Species and Ecosystem Health's Early Detection and Distribution Mapping System. EDDMapS facilitates real-time monitoring of invasive species occurrences through localized and national distribution maps alongside electronic tools for early detection reporting.
